In the fall of 1909, the sophomore class at the College of the City of New York had found itself embarrassed by "lowly freshmen". At a school where "warfare" between freshman and sophomore class was a tradition, the sophomores found it necessary to regain their fallen honor. Class Marshal Lester Cohen called a meeting of sophomore leaders on November 26, 1909 to decide on a plan for redemption. Eight appeared- Cohen, Hyman Jacobson, Adolph I. Fabis, Samuel Ginsburg, Abram N. Kerner, Jacob Kaplan, Ira N. Lindand David D. Levinson, who are now known as the Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu.

The Delta Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu at Stony Brook University was founded by 11 morally-driven men in 1989. Chartered in 1991, The Delta Theta Chapter prides itself on the strength of its brotherhood. Our goal today remains to instill fraternal values to as many worthy undergraduate men as possible, spreading the morals and ideals upon which the fraternity was founded.

In recent years, our chapter has emerged as one of the top national fraternities on campus. We've created memorable and profitable philanthropy events such as Bounce for Beats, Sammys at Your Service, and Sammy Hurricane Relief to support both our national philanthropy and the surrounding community. In 2012, we became the first ever five star fraternity at Stony Brook University, the highest rank available for Greek organizations on campus. Several of our brothers have won awards from the Fraternity & Sorority Life director and Greek community such as 'Fraternity Man of the Year' and 'IFSC Man of the Year'. Brothers from our chapter have also been awarded prestigious scholarships from the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation, something not every chapter receives. The Delta Theta Chapter  looks forward to new growth, prosperity, and guiding men down a meaningful college path.
